Recording our height and weight (All about me)

As part of learning about ourselves, we integrated maths into our learning by measuring our height and weight. It was tricky getting our weight because we had to make sure the scale was on zero first and we had to stand still on the scale. We took the reading in kilograms, then converted it into grams.
To get our height we had to stand straight against the wall and a second person had to record our height. We then had a very challenging exercise to convert centimetres into metres as well as millimetres.

Should the New Zealand summer holiday be shortened?

We heard some people say that the summer holidays should be shortened. I am not sure where these people are getting those weird ideas from because the six weeks holiday is great to go away  overseas for a long holiday. Even if you just spend time locally with your family at the beach and the parks, its good to be able to have a long holiday to get a good rest so that we can be ready for the new year at school. If you have a good reason why the New Zealand  summer holiday should be shorter, Room 11 would love to hear about it.

Black Gold - A Room 11 Manaiakalani Film Festival entry

How futile and what a waste!  Everyday millions of tons of valuable food waste and garden waste gets dumped in landfills - causing major environmental issues.  Then we go out to garden shops and waste money by buying compost for our gardens.  Room 11 will show you ways of turning your trash into cash.

Festive Foods- Roti and beans

If you cook a spicy  butter beans and potato curry and have it with roti, you will certainly not miss the meat. Its yummy, easy to make and healthy for you too. The best part is its so affordable.
Students took home a recipe  and some curry masala and cooked some awesome dishes over the weekend. At a time when food costs are so high, its time to get families cooking.

Making Roti is so easy

Many people think that making roti (flat bread) is difficult to make, but we learned first hand through making it, how simple it is. All you need is a cup of flour, 1/2 cup of hot water, a pinch of salt, a bit of oil and some good rolling skills. We ate our roti with a butter bean and potato curry which was finger licking delicious.
